Ready to handle the most aggressive and deeply resonant music available, Sony's XS-L121P5 Xplod-model automotive subwoofer boasts radical P5 cone architecture for optimal sound with higher power-handling ability, less distortion, and louder output than traditional round cones. Sony has found that a 5-sided woofer design brings structural strength and rigidity, helping the cone retain its shape. This minimizes distortion and cancellation caused by standing waves, providing louder, deeper, more accurate bass. Now you can rock the block and look good doing it, with Sony's stylish red-and-silver Xplod colors.
With higher power handling and a 50 percent increase in Xmax (or excursion, the total distance the voice coil and cone can travel), this subwoofer plays louder and sounds better than previous models. A larger magnet assembly also allows the four-layer voice coil more room to move so it can handle increased power--up to 350 watts RMS or 1,200 watts peak.
The 12-inch cone is made from Polypropylene, a plastic-based material used primarily for speaker cones due to its resistance to harsh environmental conditions, its rigidity, and its damping. Gold-plated binding posts provide a solid, secure, simple, and capable method of transferring serious current to speakers with protection against corrosion for lower resistance.
The sub's 4-layer, edge-wound voice coil has an aluminum former wound with 4 layers of copper wire that's flat rather than round, allowing the wire to pack together extremely tightly. More copper means better current handling, so the woofer can take more power. The aluminum former retains its shape and resists very high temperatures without burning or melting.
Finally, the speaker's dual "triple-layer" damper employs 3 layers of high-strength damper material to compose each of its 2 spiders (the assemblies that hold the voice coil in place), ensuring virtually perfect linear travel of the voice coil. The lead wires are embedded in the top spider, preventing entanglement and extending the voice coil's throw.
